At the end of this page it states that old greek blacksmiths wore eye patches on one eye to prevent sparks from getting into their eyes. The first Cyclops were also blacksmiths so it seemed that it was fitting to only have one eye in the stories. However while I was researching this topic many websites came up saying natives of the island ,where the Cyclops were said to live, found skulls of large elephants. They must have mistaken the hole where the elephants trunk would have been for an eye socket.
The cyclops were really elephant skulls... But the Greeks had never heard of this creature before. The skull had an big hole in the center of it for the elephants trunk. But, since the people have never heard of elephants before, they thought that it was a giant with a big eye in the center of his skull.
