A Sample Connection

The Sisters Brothers, by Patrick DeWitt, reminds me of Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses. In both books, two guys take off on a journey by horseback. They travel through a lot of empty country, encountering strangers and having adventures. Though the storylines are very similar, there are many differences. Some differences aren’t that important. In The Sisters Brothers, the main characters are brothers headed from Oregon to California and in the other book they’re best friends headed from Texas to Mexico. The big difference is the tone of the book. The Sisters Brothers is really funny and All the Pretty Horses was very serious. In both books, I have a strong sense that things are going to go badly for the characters. I was right about All the Pretty Horses – John Grady Cole ended up killing a man in a Mexican prison (but he made it home okay in the end). I’m not so sure things will turn out all right for the brothers. I’ll be surprised if both brothers survive the book.
